OC Kerry Gunu C24 is taking on the challenge of the Reading Half Marathon 2025 to raise funds for Awutu-Winton School in Ghana, a cause close to his heart. On March 23, he will run 21.1km in support of the school, which provides free secondary education to talented students from underprivileged backgrounds through the Educational Development Projects (EDP) Trust.
Born and raised in Ghana, Kerry witnessed firsthand the challenges many young people face in accessing education. While he was fortunate to receive a full bursary to study at Canford School for Sixth Form, he never forgot those who were unable to continue their studies due to financial constraints. His time at Canford reinforced the power of giving back, and after visiting Awutu-Winton last summer, he was deeply inspired by the students’ resilience and ambition.
"Education changed my life, and now, I want to help change someone else’s," Kerry shared.
His fundraising efforts will provide essential resources for Awutu-Winton students, including school fees, learning materials, and meals to ensure they can focus on their studies. Kerry’s commitment doesn’t stop at the finish line of the half marathon; in July, he will return to Ghana to volunteer at the school, teaching Business & Economics and coaching football.
One of the students Kerry met during his visit, Daniel, expressed how Awutu-Winton has transformed his life:
"This school has been a blessing to me and my family. With a free secondary education, I now have the opportunity to attend university in Ghana to study computer science. I want to graduate, find a job, and support my family."
Kerry’s goal is to create more success stories like Daniel’s by ensuring students at Awutu-Winton have the resources they need to thrive.
Donations can be made via his JustGiving page.
As Kerry takes on this challenge, he hopes to inspire others to support the power of education. "Together, we can make every step count, both on the Reading Half Marathon track and in changing lives in Ghana," he said.
We wish Kerry the best of luck in his marathon journey and look forward to following his progress!
