Legacies are exempt from inheritance tax (IHT) and for estates leaving 10% or more to charity (this can be a number of charities), there is a reduction in IHT from 40% to 36%.
HMRC guidance states that your donation will either:
Be taken off the value of your estate before Inheritance Tax is calculated
Reduce your Inheritance Tax rate, if 10% or more of your estate is left to charity
When making a bequest in your will, please note that the beneficiary should be Canford School or the Martin Marriott Foundation, Canford, Registered Charity No 306315.
How do I make sure my loved ones are looked after?
We fully understand that your family and loved ones come first in your Will. You can leave even 1% of your estate to Canford so that those closest to you still get 99%. Did you know that if you leave 10% of your estate to charity, inheritance tax due is reduced from 40% to 36%? Canford’s registered charity number is 306315.
Why should I remember Canford in my Will?
For many, leaving a gift in their Will is their way of showing support to the School. A Canford education helped change the trajectory of many OCs’ lives, making them who they are today – especially those who benefited from the Direct Grants/Assisted Places schemes between 1945 and 1997. Their very presence at Canford also helped make it a diverse and more interesting place to learn. A gift in your Will ensures today’s pupils benefit from those same opportunities whilst enriching the school’s intellectual and social diversity. A gift to Canford in your Will is an investment in future Canfordians and an opportunity to ‘pay it forward’.

Simply tell your Solicitor/Will-maker that you would like to remember Canford in your Will and give them our Registered Charity Number: 306315.
I already have a Will - how do I include Canford?
Ask your Solicitor about adding a ‘Letter of Wishes’ or a Codicil to your Will. They will need Canford’s Registered Charity Number: 306315.
Why is it better to leave a percentage of my estate to Canford as opposed to a fixed sum?
Possessions (specific gifts) and fixed sums (pecuniary gifts) are paid out from your estate first. A fixed-sum might feel appropriate at the time of making the Will, but (hopefully) many years later, it may not have the intended impact due to rising costs and inflation. Leaving a percentage of your estate to Canford will ensure your gift keeps up with rising costs over time.
Can I give now instead of leaving a legacy?
Yes. Many people enjoy seeing how their gifts can benefit students at Canford first-hand. Some taxpayers may prefer to make a gift now, allowing for tax efficiencies during your lifetime. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact the Development Team on 01202 847471.
Do I have to tell Canford if I have remembered the school in my Will?
We understand that making a Will is a deeply personal matter and you are under no obligation whatsoever to inform us if you have remembered the school in your Will. However, we would be delighted should you choose to do so. If the school is aware of your decision, it enables us to share current bursary progress at Canford with you, as well as to thank you during your lifetime by inviting you to join us for the Nineveh Legacy Society lunch each year. Those leaving a gift also receive a Nineveh Legacy Society lapel pin.
What are the inheritance tax benefits of leaving a legacy to Canford?
Canford is a registered Charity (RCN: 306315). Under current rules (Oct 2023) if you choose to leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, then inheritance tax liability reduces from 40% to 36%.
What happens if I die without a Will?
The government decides who is going to administer your estate.
