Mark and Jane recently visited Canford School, retracing the footsteps of their family’s deep connection to the school. Their grandfather, Gwilym Hughes, came to Canford in 1939 as Head of History and in 1944 served as housemaster of Salisbury House for many years alongside his wife, Mary, who embraced her role as a housemaster's wife. Their mother, Sarah, spent her childhood in the school grounds, immersed in the vibrant Canford community, as many children of staff who live on site, still do today. These fond memories were commemorated when Sarah married at Canford Magna Church in April 1959, an event that left an indelible mark on the family's history.

During their visit, Mark and Jane explored the stunning grounds, marvelling at the Salisbury House their grandfather once called home, the Tom Nash Building – a particular interest with Tom and Gwen Nash being great friends of their grandparents, and the Assyrian frieze replica in the tuck shop that their grandfather passionately championed as Head of History. The siblings were especially touched by the opportunity to recreate a treasured photograph of their parents on their wedding day, standing in the exact spot where their mother and father once posed in celebration of their union.

Reflecting on their visit, the siblings shared, “Canford School was mentioned so frequently and always with enormous fondness by our grandparents. Seeing these places and standing where our parents once stood brought those cherished stories to life.” This visit not only honoured the family’s past but also celebrated the enduring legacy of Canford School as a place where memories and connections are cherished across generations.
