Canford School has been recognised as one of the leading schools in the country following the publication of its latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report, which highlights a “significant strength” in the development of pupil leadership.
The inspection, which took place last term, resulted in an exceptionally positive report across all areas of school life. We are keen to encourage people to read the report in full, reflecting our confidence in the inspectors’ findings and our pride in the whole-school community.
Of particular note is the inspection team’s award of a “significant strength” for pupil leadership, an accolade reserved for very few schools with areas of excellence that really stand out. Inspectors praised the way Canford empowers its pupils, recognising leadership at all levels as a defining feature of the school’s culture and ethos.
This recognition is seen as a testament not only to the pupils themselves, but also to the dedication and commitment of staff who support and nurture leadership at every level.
To mark the achievement, the school held a celebratory lunch for pupils and staff, reflecting Canford’s strong sense of community and shared success. From national awards and outstanding examination results to inspection outcomes, the school continues to celebrate incredible collective achievements.
The report places Canford firmly among the very best schools in the country, reinforcing its reputation for excellence and its commitment to developing confident, capable, and values-driven young leaders.
Headmaster, Chris Wheeler, said: "It is wonderful to see Canford recognised for so many of its strengths. The Inspection team were engaged, thorough and really took time to understand us. Our pupils are the engine room of the school and drive one another’s achievements, so it was a pleasure to see the inspectors describing our work in pupil leadership as a 'significant strength'".
Deputy Head Pastoral, Richard Redwood, said: "What stands out most in this report is the way our pupils look after one another as they grow into leaders. Their willingness to step forward for their peers reflects a pastoral culture where every young person feels valued, supported and empowered to make a positive difference."
Deputy Head Academic, Ieuan Weir, said: "I’m incredibly proud of our community. When dedicated teachers and pupils unite with care, purpose and belief, they spark excellence that rises far beyond the sum of its parts. We have a culture where collaboration turns effort into achievement."
