For many, the idea of undertaking a rigorous academic course in a foreign language might seem daunting. For Robert Pierson SH58, however, it was an opportunity not just to deepen his knowledge, but to embrace a truly international experience at one of the world's most prestigious institutions. In the final four months of 2024, Robert studied French Business parlance and formal expression at The Sorbonne, culminating in the achievement of his Certification in French Business Studies.
A key component of the course required students to select three Paris-based businesses and deliver PowerPoint-illustrated case studies as part of their final assessment. These presentations, assessed viva voce by the teaching staff, were a test of linguistic skill, analytical thinking, and business acumen.
Robert was one of thirteen students from across the globe, forming a diverse cohort with classmates hailing from Russia, Ukraine, China, Nepal, Mexico, South Korea, Brazil, and Guatemala. The group bonded over their shared challenge and mutual passion for learning, creating a supportive and dynamic learning environment.
A memorable moment from the experience was the final day of the course, when the students presented a fine Paul Smith scarf to their esteemed professor, Louis-Jean Fesquet. His well-worn and threadbare scarf had become something of a signature, and the thoughtful gift was a testament to the group’s appreciation of his dedication and expertise.
Reflecting on his time at The Sorbonne, Robert shared that as an eighty-four-year-old student, he had initially been apprehensive about the experience. However, he ultimately found it to be both enriching and deeply rewarding. His achievement stands as an inspiration to lifelong learners everywhere and a testament to the power of intellectual curiosity.
Congratulations to Robert on this remarkable accomplishment!
