We are delighted to announce the 2025 recipients of the Donald Dean Award: Old Canfordians Miles Quick C21 and Pavlos Karampoulas S21. This award supports Old Canfordians undertaking medical electives, enabling them to gain invaluable experience in healthcare settings across the world.
Miles will be completing his medical elective in Central America, spending time at the national hospital in Guatemala, under the care of an intensive care consultant. During his placement, Miles will rotate through a range of specialties including intensive care, anaesthetics, trauma and orthopaedics, and paediatrics, with a particular focus on anaesthetics, his area of interest. Prior to beginning the placement, Miles and his colleagues will undertake intensive Spanish and medical Spanish courses to ensure they are fully prepared to engage with patients and staff, maximising both their learning and their contribution to the hospital team.
Pavlos has chosen a dual-location elective, reflecting his desire to experience contrasting healthcare environments. He will spend time in both France and Senegal, where he plans to work primarily in the emergency department. Pavlos was drawn to the opportunity to practise medicine in settings where healthcare needs are more immediate, while also developing his French language skills. His elective reflects his ambition to use medicine as a means to serve diverse communities and to broaden his professional and cultural understanding, in a way inspired by the values of the late Dr Donald Dean.
The Donald Dean Award forms part of Dr Dean’s enduring legacy. Born in Manchester in 1927, Dr Dean built an extraordinary international career in medicine, working across the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean. His contributions to occupational and tropical medicine, alongside his role in establishing medical services in developing regions, continue to inspire Canfordians to view medicine as a truly global profession.
We congratulate Miles and Pavlos on their achievements and wish them every success in their forthcoming electives. Their projects reflect both academic ambition and a deep commitment to global healthcare, qualities that embody the spirit of the Donald Dean Award.
If you are an Old Canfordian interested in applying for the 2026 Donald Dean Award, please look out for further details in the Autumn. The award offers up to £1,500 in funding to support medical electives and provides an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in diverse medical settings worldwide.
