Old Canfordian Albert Blackburn C24, returned to school last week to speak with Upper Sixth pupils about his gap year, offering a vivid and honest look at life beyond the classroom.
Through an engaging presentation, Albert shared his experiences interrailing across Europe, volunteering and road tripping in Africa, and embarking on a more classic gap year adventure through South East Asia. Along the way, he brought his journey to life with photographs, video clips and personal stories that captured both the highlights and the challenges of travelling independently.
The session gave pupils a realistic insight into the many ways a gap year can be shaped. Albert spoke about the value of volunteering, the benefits of travelling with people you meet along the way to help keep costs down, and the type of work he took on before leaving to fund his travels. His reflections helped pupils think practically about planning, budgeting and making the most of the opportunities a year out can offer.
Pupils came away feeling inspired and better informed, with plenty of ideas and useful tips to consider as they begin to plan their own next steps.
Our thanks to Albert for returning to Canford and sharing his experiences so generously.
